Bemelman's Bar
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
35 E 76th St Carlyle Hotel, New York 10021 212-744-1600
Description: UPPER EAST SIDE. This Madison Avenue piano bar, named after an
author of children's literature, attracts a more mature and well-heeled group
of clientele than some of the Upper East Side's other nightspots do. Murals
from Ludwig Bemelman's depict scenes from "Madeline" and a few of
his other stories, adding nice contrast to the bar's "Old New York"
atmosphere. Indeed, this place is reminiscent of the city's classic piano bars
- joints where you could enjoy a good drink and great music in relative peace.
Make sure you dress well and bring plenty of green - things here lean toward
the expensive side. TRAIN: 6 to 77th St
Brandy's Piano Bar
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
235 E 84th St between 2nd and 3rd Aves, New York 10128 212-744-4949
Description: UPPER EAST SIDE. Fortunately for its boisterous patrons, Brandy's
stays open late. This popular piano bar is one part sing-along and two parts
lounge. Expect to have a great time here and plan to participate with the staff
and largely mixed clientele in the crooning. Regardless, there's something mysteriously
elegant about this place - maybe its two the lovely ladies who stand guard on
either side of the piano. TRAIN: 4, 5, 6 to 86th St
Danny's Broadway Piano Bar
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
346 W 46th St between 8th and 9th Aves, New York 10036 212-265-8133
Description: MIDTOWN WEST. Known as the place to go for great cabaret, Danny's
features a piano bar as well. Located in the rear of a Thai seafood restaurant
called "Danny's Grand Sea Palace," the piano bar presents different
talents nightly. You will probably find a packed house. Packages are available
for a dinner-show combination. TRAIN: A, C, E to 42nd St-Port Authority; C,
E to 50th St; N, R, S, 1, 9, 2, 3, 7 to 42nd St-Times Sq
Don't Tell Mama
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
343 W 46th St between 8th and 9th Aves, New York 10036 212-757-0788
Description: MIDTOWN. If you are in the mood for a no-holds-barred eclectic
mix, plan to go to Don't Tell Mama. This sometimes-smoky piano bar features
live jazz, sing-alongs and cabaret rooms, which feature comedy groups, musicals,
vocal groups and a variety of other acts. Unlike your typical quiet and cozy
piano bar, this one rocks with laughter and conversation from a mix of patrons
who would not normally be seen on the street with each other. There is no food
served here, so don't go hungry. TRAIN: A, C, E to 42nd St/Port Authority Bus
Terminal; C, E to 50th St; N, R, S, 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 to 42nd St-Times Sq
FireBird Cafe
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
363 W 46th St between 8th and 9th Aves, New York 10036 212-586-0244
Description: MIDTOWN WEST. Fine art, mirrors and the long, narrow space lend
an air of intimacy to the FireBird. Nestle in for the night as you sample fine
food and wine and enjoy a great cabaret act, featuring expert talent from around
the world. The club books famous revues, such as "Fascinating Aida,"
featuring popular British singers. Live piano and harp music are also featured
here. Great evening stop for the after theatre crowd. TRAIN: A, C, E; N, R;
1, 9, 2, 3; 7 to 42nd St-Times Sq
Gramercy Park Hotel Bar
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
2 Lexington Ave, New York 10010 212-475-4320
Description: GRAMERCY. The bar at the suave Gramercy Park Hotel, once the preferred
watering hole for dozens of celebrities, is worth checking out if for no other
reason than to experience its fashionably seedy atmosphere. With its dim candlelight,
red drapes and beautiful wood-paneled bar, this joint, which overlooks Lexington
Avenue, looks like an expatriate hangout circa 1946. Today, you can expect to
see a good mix of international travelers, wannabe models, fledging actors and
even a few music execs - all of whom enjoy looking mysterious while the piano
man plays in the background. TRAIN: 6 at Park Ave; 4, 5, 6, N, R, L to Union
Sq
Top of the Tower
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
3 Mitchell Pl, New York 10017 212-355-7300
Description: MIDTOWN. Even native New Yorkers enjoy a stunning view of the city
from this art deco lounge located 26 stories up. The late-night bar is open
seven days a week and features live piano Tuesday through Sunday. Open-air terraces
wrap around the restaurant and bar area, inviting guests to enjoy a cocktail
al fresco while enjoying the view. TRAIN: E, F to Lexington Ave; 6 to 51st St
Townhouse
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
236 E 58th St, New York 10001 212-754-4649
Description: MIDTOWN EAST. The dress code is strictly enforced in this three-part
gay club. In other words, don't bother going if you are dressed casually. You
will see more suits than anything else, so look the part if you want to get
in. The dark wood and lush fabrics found in these three rooms produce a feeling
of quiet elegance. The large and lively piano bar is on the same floor with
the front lounge, a casual bar with comfy sofas. Downstairs you will find a
quiet atmosphere, better suited for conversation. Cash only policy. TRAIN: N,
R to Lexington Ave; 4, 5, 6 to 59th St
Waldorf Cocktail Terrace
(Night Life - Piano Bars)
301 Park Ave The Waldorf-Astoria and Waldorf Towers, New York 10022 212-355-3000
Description: MIDTOWN. Since 1893, the Waldorf has been a landmark of success
and elegance. The terrace cocktail lounge overlooks the elegantly restored lobby,
where one might relax with a drink or afternoon tea while enjoying the strains
of piano music. Mosaic floors and oil murals make up the fine décor that
surrounds guests. TRAIN: 6 to 51st St

In The Village and Chelsea ....
THE DUPLEX 61 Christopher
St. -212-255-5438
This is a rollicking piano bar with the most fun in town. The upstairs bar (yes,
it is a duplex) features a hot juke box and a pool table. This is the newest
cabaret in the Village - with the oldest name. This was the site of the old
VILLAGE VOICE building, and the Duplex moved here just a few years ago.
JUDY'S CHELSEA 169 Eighth Avenue - 1-212-929-5410
MARIE'S CRISIS 59 Grove
St. -212-243-9323
Mostly show tunes here, and every working or retired chorus boy in NYC gathering
around. And where did the name Marie's Crisis come from? Well, this place used
to be an inn during the Revolutionary War, and Thomas Paine stayed here and
wrote many tracts and pro-revolutionary letters here.
ONE IF BY LAND, TWO IF BY SEA 17 Barrow St. -212-228-0822
Ah, romance! This lovely little former carriage house is a favorite for those
in love (or planning to be). Dress up a bit and feel like a million bucks. The
food is great, the service elegant, and the music: "Love songs, nothing
but love songs". Try to arrive by limo to complete the experience. Credit
cards OK. ROSE'S TURN 55 Grove St. -212-366-5438
Walk down Grove St. any night and the wild fun at this basement room will draw
you in. If you can make it through the crowd on the stairs to the piano area,
be prepared for non-stop fun. The best piano bar talents can all be found here.
Take a good look around - this is the original site of the Duplex, the oldest
cabaret in the city.
STONEWALL BISTRO - 113 Seventh Avenue South -917-661-1335
In the Theatre District...
DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM 346 West 46th St. -212-265-8130
This is a real piano bar - they call it the BROADWAY PIANO BAR in honor of the
Broadway stars who drop by from time to time. No goofing off here, just real
music performed by masterful pianists. You can sit right around the piano. The
staff here is professional to a T. And Danny's serves great food, too. Credit
cards OK.
DON'T TELL MAMA 343 West 46th St. -212-757-0788
Oh, what fun. Located in the heart of the theatre district, you will find loads
of talent here at the open mike -both staff and customers. This place has such
a talented gang on staff I hate to single anyone out. Every night is a treat
here. Best time to drop by is just before the theaters let out. Get a good seat
and watch the stars and future stars stop in for a drink and hopefully a song
before they head home. Credit cards OK in the piano bar, but not in the cabaret
room.
LA RIVISTA RISTORANTE 313 West 46th St. - 1-212-245-1707
This Italian restaurant gets high marks for food and service, and now it gets
high marks for having fine musicians at the piano from 8 to midnight, Tuesdays
through Saturdays. It is at street level, and just down a few doors from Don't
Tell Mama and across from Danny's, on Restaurant Row. No cover, no minimum,
and free parking next door, if you have dinner. Credit cards OK.
SAM'S THEATRE BAR & RESTAURANT 263 West 45th St. -212-719-5416
This is a very busy spot, especially in the hours immediately before the Broadway
shows go up. But the rest of the evening is quiet, except for a quick mad rush
during intermission time. They have some great food here and a popular Sunday
Brunch as well. Credit cards OK.
Uptown, East Side....
BRANDY'S 235 East 84th St.
-212-650-1944
Who said this place was a "best-kept secret"? I can hardly get in
the door when I visit! Real rollicking fun with a great singing wait-staff.
Younger crowd, but lots of great singers.
THE MONKEY BAR 60 East 54th Street - 1-212-838-2600
PEGASUS 119 East 60th St.
-212-888-4702
One of the prettiest piano bars in town, this place features a charming bar,
a central cafe and piano space, and a quaint garden - all within a few steps
of Bloomingdale's. The piano doesn't get in business until about 9 pm.
REGENTS 317 East 53rd Street - 1-212-593-3091
TOWN HOUSE 236 East 58th
St. -212-754-4649
If you want an elegant gentlemen's bar, this is the place for you.It is actually
a remodeled townhouse and very finely decorated. Better look your best or they
won't let you in. With the closing of Rounds, a few blocks away, this place
seems to have gotten more commercial. But it's been some time since I made a
visit, so check it out. Credit cards OK.
In The Hotels....
BEEKMAN TOWER 3 Mitchell
Pl. -212-355-7300BEMELMAN'S BAR 35 East 76th St. -212-744-1600
This is a formal piano bar, next to the Cafe Carlyle and inside the Carlyle
Hotel. Only the best pianists in NY get asked to perform here, with Barbara
Carroll taking turns every few months with other pianists at the piano. A bit
formal and pricey, but worth it for that special date. Don't plan on any sing-alongs
here. The only piano bar I ever visited with a cover charge. Credit cards OK.
CAFE PIERRE 2 East 61st St. -212-838-8000
This really must be called a piano restaurant, with piano here nightly amid
elegance and charm. The food here is first rate, with prices to match. But the
room is cozy and warm, and the service is tops. Every once in a while, they
do cabaret here, but most of the time just the piano.
